The Search Marketplace

, Tech , Web Search

In the wake of the recent news of Yahoo! buying Overture for $1.63Billion, todays Wall Street Journal has a front page story, Rising Clout of Google Prompts Rush by Internet Rivals to Adapt.

By virtue of being front page news the story itself is little more than a summary of the situation and how the search market has recently evolved.

Of some interest is:

  • interesting insight into the reaction at Yahoo! when Google News was launched, "Worried Yahoo executives began calling industry contacts to see if they thought Google News signified a threat"

  • talk of Froogle emerging to challenge eBay and Amazon

  • consideration of Microsoft's plans including MSN and OS embedded search in the next version of Windows code-named Longhorn
