Snowboarding at Lake Tahoe

I'm home now and thought it was about time I posted something on here. Tahoe was awesome. It snowed 4 or 5 feet while we were up there. We stayed just outside Truckee which is handy for several mountains. On the first day we hit Alpine Meadows, the weather was mixed, clouds and snow but with sun poking through. I took the day pretty easy, got my board waxed and did maybe 5 or 6 runs. The difference in my board was amazing once it was fixed up, gliding over the snow rather than kinda just munging through it. Throughout the week we also went to Homewood and Squaw Valley.

Homewood is a small place, though with plenty of snow covered mountain. It's got a good feel about it. This is where I got my first experience of snowboarding in several feet of powder snow. It's a funny feeling, very different from boarding on a run which has just been compacted by a piste beastie. That I had to keep speed up to avoid sinking into the powder helped me a little in building up my speed in general. Of course I sunk into the snow a good few times too and had to dig my way out. Sitting, buried in snow, I resolved that I'm getting fit before the next time I go.

Squaw was good fun too, tho' it's a kind of eerie 1970's eastern bloc ski resort for rich russians in purple all-in-one's. Huge area, some fun runs.

Truckee itself is a quaint wee place, great Taco restaurant and the Bar of America does a great steak with garlic mashed potatoes.
