UK VoIP (aka VoB) Encouraged by OfCom

The UK Telecommunications Regulator OfCom has announced a new Voice over IP (or Voice over Broadband) non-geographic numbering prefix '056' to identify VoIP phone connecions. They have also said that VoIP customers will be able to have geographical numbers allocated facilitating migration from PSTN telephony services without having to change phone number. Ofcom Chief Executive, Stephen Carter said,

"Broadband voice services are a new and emerging market. Our first task as regulator is to keep out of the way. As the market develops, we will ensure that consumers are appropriately informed and protected.”
OfCom has also launched a public consultation to determine the level of consumer protection such as guaranteed access to emergency services numbers should be applied to Voice over IP / Broadband services. The consultation closes on November 15th, 2004.
