Hearts and Minds

There was a troubling report on the Channel 4 News this evening, Losing hearts and minds, which followed "Charlie Company" in their mission to root out resistance in Samarra, Iraq. While I am sure that there are good examples of this kind of activity taking place every day, the piece on Ch.4 was troubling because there seemed to be such a gaping disconnect between the soldiers and the Iraqi people; each thought the other not worthy of any respect. No shared humanity. Maybe it was just sensational TV. It certainly reflected a sensationally unimpressive short-termism unbefitting of the occupation.
