Afghan election law disenfranchises warlords

A New Afghan election law bans warlords from taking part in politics according to Salon.

"Nobody with armed forces behind them can continue their political activities," Justice Minister Abdulrahim Karimi told a new conference Sunday.

The law apparently also puts a lower limit of 700 members on political parties before they can be "registered".

I can't find a text of the existing laws to see how significant these changes are. Further information about the legal situation in Afghanistan is available at Jurist Afghanistan.
