How to name your child.

Via Popbitch a link to a story describing some weird child naming conventions - Look Nivea, it's your new little sister, Porsche.

Apparently there's a trend to name kids after brands, usually aspirational ones but sometimes just plain daft. The article recounts some of the names used over the last several years including Chivas Regal, Champagne, Nivea, Pepsi, Porsche, Lexus, Canada, Cobra, Nike, Chanel and so on.

All well and good you might think but what happens to the child psychologically when the brand they are named after devalues itself and rather than being associated with an asporational product they end up being featured in advertorials on the shopping channel. Oh the folly.

Even better, what if the brands start suing the kids/parents because the child, by existing, is engaging in trademark infringement. I can't wait until a parent is enjoined from calling a child by his or her first name.... ;-)
