Pixies Reunion Tour April 2004

According to Pitchfork (via workoffiction) The Pixies are reuniting for a tour in April 2004 followed by (if all goes well) a studio album. The news was broken by MTV on the basis of a promise by a spokesman for the Pixies.

Frank Black (Black Francis)'s manager told Billboard.com, "I have received an offer for the Pixies to perform in April. That said, over the past 10 years, I have received dozens of offers for the Pixies."

The ever esteemed Guardian recaps the Pixies story for those not in the know

"Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, the Pixies were formed in 1986 by frontman Black Francis and guitarist Joey Santiago. Bassist Kim Deal and drummer Dave Lovering completed the line-up and their debut album, Come on Pilgrim, was released the following year.

Critical plaudits came with the arrival of the savage 1988 album Surfer Rosa, while its more polished follow-up, 1989's Doolittle, broke out of the indie ghetto to reach No 3 in the UK album charts. The band released a further two albums - Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991) - before an acrimonious split in 1992."

4AD who represented the band when they were active is aware of the rumours but are unable to comment as they are not involved in any current activities. NME seem more sceptical than most appending a big question mark to their headline, Pixies set to Reunite?.

The Pixies are vocalist/guitarist Black Francis, vocalist/bassist Kim Deal, lead guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering.

When the eagles reunited they told us that hell does indeed freeze over. Perhaps the pixies will prove that pigs can fly. In summary though, there's no confirmation of anything at all let alone dates or venues or indeed whether the tour will take in the UK. We can hope. Post any news or updates in the comments section.

I've heard about this recently, and it's quite exciting, having missed the Pixies live first time round. I'm not sure - if the rumours are true - whether or not the reunion will be a good or a bad thing. There's a lot of discussion as to whether or not there may be some new songs, or even an album, but considering the split, and the hostility between band members, this rumour alone is a surprise. Maybe they'll ruin what they created, and everything about the Pixies, with this apparent tour, but maybe we'll be lucky and they'll make the most of this moment, and introduce the world to what it's been missing - classic Pixies. It would be very welcome in this shambles of a music scene that we have. Not before or since their time has there been a band like the Pixies, lyrically and musically, they are unique. I look forward to their return (if it happens) and can only hope for a UK tour...lets hope they don't blow it.

Well, I'm not quite sure it will happen, but fortunately I got to see them live twice, once in Rhode Island, and again in my home state Alabama, after 'Doolittle' was released. They were brilliant both times, a religious experience for me; they deserved a helluva lot more respect than they ever got. Hope this opens up some new minds to their music.

and so begins the double edge sword. on the one side, it would be great to see them play and hear, what i know, would be the best record in years. on the other, those of you who are old enough to remember the late 80's early 90's, im not looking forward to the copy cats dominating the air waves while the pixies, yet again, fall on deaf ears. or the ever popular "i have been listening to them for years...blah blah blah" being said by bands and people you hate. remember what happened after THE MISFITS came back. now were stuck with a whole slew of shit the mainstream calls punk.

How cool would it be if the pixies reunited??? unfortunatly I didn't know them from the first time round but since I was introduced to them a few years ago I think I can say I am obsessed! HAIL TO THE PIXIES!!!!!

Posted by: Líosa at October 18, 2003 02:57 PM

A reunion would be a dream come true for me! I just missed their last tour (something for school... dangit!)Then became completely obsessed with the group. I want... no NEED them to get back together. I've never thought, only dreamed that I could see the Pixies in concert. Now maybe it can come true. *my fingers are crossed*

The possibility of getting to see the pixies live is unbelievably exciting for me, since I'll never be able to see my two other favourite bands play (the Beatles and the Who). Hearing that a new album in the works is exciting too, but I must say I have my doubts. Still, I think they could pull it off!

I don't get gooey over celebrity. I loath the idea of fame. I was a barista for the mermaid whore of babylon, and once, Rod Stewart came in for some coffee. There was a line of, perhaps, ten in front of him. He made a fuss, hoping for cuts, and when he didn't get it, he stormed out. C'est la vie, who gives a deuce? No one, I thought, could expect special service from me. But then, wait. There is one person in this world who I would violate food service etiqette for. Black Francis. Not Frank Black, Black Francis. I would dance the manta ray right over to my register and tell the rest of the line to hang on to their egos. And, despite being a heterosexual male, I'd find a way to have his babies. He is, at the very least, alone on my "IF I EVER GO GAY" list. Okay, maybe Chris Walken is on there, too. Wait a minute, what?
I never got a chance to see them live. They broke up when I was ten. This may be my only chance. I've spent time in LA, I've stood in the presence of celebrity. Whooptie Shyte. This may be the only time I could stew in awe for another human being.
Charlie, if you're reading this, I love you, but eff the Catholics. Do this thing, for all the kids like me. Do it for those of us that can't stomach formula indie pop, and know something better in four mischievous elves. Do it for the dire state of music. I promise that, if you do, the names Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering will live on and on and on.

-The pretentiously elusive Salvadore Steinbeck

P.S. Kim, please marry me.

I would die a happy man to see the Pixies live. I've seen the Breeders, the Amps and Frank Black countless times in order to ever consume some minute detail of the Pixies silhoutte. I just heard the rumor of a reunion and the mere mention of it has made me all numb and tingly.

I am a medical student and a die hard Pixies fan. Next June I will start my General Surgery residency and never be able to do anything social again. An April Pixies Tour very well might be the last chance for me to ever see the Pixies again. If you guys(i.e. Pixes)are reading this, please tour. And oh yeah, Could you record a live show to analog tape and release it on vinyl totally bypassing all digital processing? If you play Omaha, Nebraska I promise we'll have a big vat of hummus for you. I'll make it myself.

The first time the Sex Pisotls toured after reuniting I stayed away, fearing the worst kind of re-hash but my friend saw them and cursed me for being a cautious fool. So when they came this time I went and was impressed. I've heard rumours of about the Pixies coming back before, maybe this one more ferocious then than the rest. And if it's true and not just bad whispers in rotten eardrums..then watch out Lazarus, doom is coming for the world of wrong rock. Amen.

Posted by: M. Andre Moore at October 28, 2003 05:34 AM

praise them with great praise! and worry not about the copy cats cuz those cats died miles behind what the pixies have done!

Posted by: ryan at October 28, 2003 07:29 AM

every time i catch those whispers, those tentative, hopeful, wondering whispers about the pixies (THE PIXIES THE PIXIES) reuniting for a tour, i really can hardly stand it. i get all shivery--like i've got some wonderful variety of the flu--my stomach goes all funny, and i'm altogether overwhelmed. i can't stand it i can't stand it i can't stand it.

let it be real let it be real... it's just that it would be so nice, you see.

This is great news, I hope it works out. The Pixies may just be the greatest band of all time.

There is another band that has taken the torch from the Pixies and done some amazing things with it. I strongly urge EVERYONE here who is a Pixies fanatic to listen to anything and everything by Modest Mouse - these guys are awesome. You will start listening to them and only them for months at a time, just the way you did with the Pixies (and still do). Isaac (the singer/guitar player) is amazing.

Posted by: george at October 31, 2003 09:55 PM

I have had few seminal moments in my "music" life, but the pixies figure in 2 of the top three!
1. Pixies live at Bristol 1989 (the whole mosh-pit thing - awesome)
2. New Order at Glastonbury (Sunrise was unbelievable)
3. Pixies at Glastonbury (with my wife to be - proceeded to fall in love during Van Morrison's Sweet Thing)

Could a reunion tour possibly pinch the number 2 slot? Or could the impossible happen and they top the performance of their lives. I'll just have to be at every gig to judge! C'mon you guys, the nastiness was a LONG time ago and none of you have quite hit the spot alone, now have you? That's not a criticism, but Johnny Wilkinson can't win the World Cup on his own, only the right blend of talents creates that difference between the good and the great.
If you've any doubts about the success of any reunion tour - forget 'em - EVERYONE LOVES THE PIXIES! Go on....just for the crack if nothing else.
See you all there!

HAIL TO THE PIXIES! For a long time I thought it was the best band that I've heard, and I still believe in it, with it's kind of energy, rock, melody, guitarrs, screaming, all together really the best stuff ever! I never got the chance to see them live, I only saw Frank Black 1 week ago, with the Catholics. The guys played 5-6 Pixies songs, a fact that made me the happiest man in the concert hall that evening. Even if the new formed Pixies do not make come true everything what we expect from them (and obviously everyone that has posted here expects a lot!), I wouldn't miss their 2004 concert for anything in the world! PIXIES, PLEASE TOUR VIENNA!!! :-)

OK - Jonny Wilkinson CAN win the World Cup (see previous post)so come on Frank, it's world domination time!

Posted by: raven at November 28, 2003 05:44 PM

I hope this is not a set up. Maybe it would have been best if I hadn't come across this bit of info, because I want it to come to pass so badly.
I was introduced to the Pixies in 1991 when I was 17. This was just on the eve of they're split. For 12 years now I have considered the Pixies to be my favorite band alongside The Beatles. The two bands that I wish I could travel back in time to witness in concert. Of course, the possibility of the Fab 4's return was taken away from us some 23 years ago. The Pixies on the other hand, have all been alive and kicking. Still, from what I had read of the band's fueding, the chances of a reunion seemed futile. There was a glimmer of hope when I saw Dave Lovering open up for the Catholics last April in New Orleans but I basically dismissed the notion,... but now? Now? A direct quote from Mr.Black is utterly blowing my fucking mind. This can't be real can it? I wish I had never found out because now I'm in an agonizing amount of anticipation. Must wake up!!

The Pixies have been said to be performing at Coachella. Radiohead is scheduled to headline the festival. This is all rumored, and so is the pixies. Anyways, Thom Yorke said that he would never allow the Pixies to open for Radiohead cause its like the beatles opening for radiohead. it just doesn't make sense. but can you imaging? radiohead and pixies at the same concert? wow.

I will say it, just like everybody else.....I dream of a reunion.

If I had three wishes, one of them would be to see them live before I die...I swear to God. And the way my health is going, that may be sooner than later.

The whole reason I picked up a Telecaster and wanted to learn to play back in 1988 was because of Frank.

PLEASE let there be a reunion...and soon.

Pixies Rock!!!! just wanna start off by stating that. It makes me angry how bands like sum41 and greenday get all this credit when they suck, they play the same riff in every song. The pixies have some of the best riffs ever Frank Black is just a dynamic gituar player and singer. The band never got the credit they desrved. I had the pleasure of seeing them open for U2 in 1992, I have enjoyed Frank Blacks "Teenager of the Year" album alot but it is just not the same, this band has somthing that a lot of bands today don't have. I can listen to every Pixies CD from begining to end. I can't wait to see what happens.

oh how strange my life has become... the pixies are getting back together but will it be bitter sweet? I just turned a new friend on to them and she thought it was new. I am a fresh 30 and caught the pixies during high school-class of 91 ( christ im old) which is my point- if the pixies go on tour- stay the hell out of my way you little shits!! you have no idea how long ive waited, how many people ive turned on to their music, blah blah blah. Acid Mothers Temple is the only band to come to town in the last 13 years that i would say changed me like the pixies, and they are supposed to come to the states this year, so everyone should look out for them too, they are NOTHING like the pixies they are from japan, but thier show/sound was so fresh I felt like I was 18 again with a shit eating grin hearing the pixies for the first time live.I hope some of the newer music fans get that same rush because nothing great has happened to music for a while- so if your in Chicago just stay out of the old guys way!

Posted by: D. Fahlgren at January 6, 2004 08:35 PM

Ok, 1991 best gig i had seen at the time (by far), been to many gigs since and funnily enough the only one that came close was Radiohead.

Ok, now to be sceptical. They have DVD coming out this year, which will be immediately bought, so obviously some publicity would be good for a band that has not been in existence for the past 11 years especially when their popularity had come down to fantastic music and more importantly...word of mouth.

Ok, now for the hope. I am absolutely sht!!ting bricks over the prospect of the Pixies reuniting. I am going to be watching all the news to see if it is indeed a world tour or if the Coachella festival is the only gig. If it is i suppose i will beg borrow and steal to get to the states to see them. If however some organiser sees this mail then all i can say is PLEASE COME BACK TO SCOTLAND AND PLAY THE BARROWLANDS!!!!!!

Posted by: McGinger at January 14, 2004 06:58 PM

I saw them several times, in Boston, in Denver, in LA, in SF and they rocked every single f**kin' time. It was a shame that they disbanded because they - and not U2 or Radiohead or any other band - were the greatest rock band in the world. Let's hope this is for real.

Posted by: karl s at January 15, 2004 02:04 AM

Don't expect the WORLD.

I DID see the Pixies. Twice. The first time was in 1987 or 1988, by accident in NYC with the Throwing Muses. While visiting there, a friend of a friend, who worked at a local college radio station took us to see the Muses. I had not heard of either band at the time and didn't care for either of them live. I remember thinking that the way the lead singer T. Muses rocked back and forth was really annoying, whoever she was. Oh how naive I was. Long story a little shorter, after being introduced to both of the bands simultaneously again in 1989, (Doolittle, Surfer Rosa, Come On Pilgrim & Hunkpapa), I was TOTALLY transformed. All future music I heard was judged in comparison to the Pixies and T. Muses. By the time Trope le Monde came out, I had the release date marked on my calendar for months in anticipation.

I saw them the second time in 1992 for said album. They were quite smart in the way they performed. VERY anticlimactic. There was an enormous amount of energy in the room. The house lights were still on when some smoke started to waft out onto the stage. It happend for quite a while before they eventually just kind of nonchalantly walked out and started playing their absolutely SLOWEST songs ever. They did this for 2 or 3 songs, with the house lights still on. You could hear the crowd over them and there was even a hint of booing. They eventually picked up the pace, and the show was pretty good overall, but not as good as I had built it up to be. The crowd got REALLY intense and became a total mob scene. Much too packed to even joke about a pit. I started out front & middle and ended up way over to the side, sopping wet with sweat. They even had to rescue a few people out of the crowd because it was so packed. Absolutely glad I went, but I would say the performance was not as good as it could have been. I have seen Frank Black a few times as well, and his shows did seem to be really good & tight in contrast.

Their videos are absolute GENIUS.

Their solo work started out REALLY good, but given the recent work by The Breeders, the Amps and F.B & the Catholics, I wouldn't expect too much from the 'reunited' pixies. Hopefully, just HOPEFULLY!!!!, they will delight us and take us in a WONDERFUL new direction.

Posted by: mossjunkie at January 22, 2004 07:27 PM

The pixies, since their split in '93, have gained an entire legion, a veritable army of fans that never saw them live because they only discovered them on CD after the break-up. I'm sure if they reunited now, they would not only make my, and many, many other dreams come true, they would discover their following has grown ten-fold. Please, if their is a god, let the pixies come back and do UK tour. If possible, let them play glastonbury festival 2004. Please...this must happen
