New Legal Environment in Iraq

Interesting article at Iraq Today : Lawyers come to terms with new legal environment.

Progress seems to be slow, but there are a couple of very encouraging signs -

"An important amendment took place concerning punitive punishment. A suspect has to have a lawyer to defend him during a primary investigation. If he can't afford one, the court will now provide one," explained Ebrahim Al-Hindawi, head of judges in Adhamyia court.

and in a move befitting any civilised country, and few have the richness and breadth of civilisation as Iraq, the death penalty has been suspended.
